The first blockchain application is also still the best known for the time being: the bitcoin cryptocurrency. Many other cryptocoins and (crypto) tokens have appeared since the bitcoin was introduced, whether or not via an Initial Coin Offering (ICO). In the Netherlands, too, increasingly more consumers are hastily investing in tokens and ICOs, prompted by 'fear of missing out'. Yet, as the Netherlands Authority for the Financial Markets has already warned, there are various risks associated with such investments.
In addition to the risks involved, questions also abound in this area, such as what are ICOs and tokens, what are the various types of tokens, how should tokens be defined legally and how do regulatory authorities deal with tokens and ICOs?
