Maria Bouwman has worked as an attorney in Pels Rijcken's Spatial Planning and Environment Department since 2021. Her focus is on environmental liability law. Maria sees justice as the key element of her work. She stands up for that which is vulnerable, without losing sight of the public interest. Maria has a great interest in human rights and the way international law resonates throughout the national level in issues such as climate change and air pollution. She in fact wrote her master's thesis on interest groups and (international) court access in environmental cases.
Maria graduated cum laude from Utrecht University with a master's degree in Private Law, and an emphasis on liability law. She also graduated cum laude from Leiden University with a master's in Jurisprudence and Legal Philosophy (Encyclopedie en Filosofie van het Recht). During her studies, she gained experience volunteering at the Council for Refugees and as a working student at De Brauw Blackstone Westbroek. After that, she worked for a while as a lecturer at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. Maria regularly publishes in professional journals on (environmental) liability law. In addition to Dutch and English, she speaks (legal) French and Spanish.
